Purposeful screen time: making it work for your young learner

Screens aren't necessarily the enemy — what matters is how they're used. Here are practical ideas for turning your child's screen time into something with a clear purpose, instead of random consumption.

Tell passive watching apart from meaningful interaction

Watching one clip after another without pausing is different from an activity that asks your child to think, answer, or interact with their hands and voice. Before opening any app or video, ask yourself: is my child actually taking part, or just watching?

Interactive content — like educational games that need a tap or an answer — keeps your child engaged with their mind, not just their eyes.

Set clear, consistent limits ahead of time

Agree on a set duration and times with your child before screen use starts, not in the middle of an argument or tears. Clarity set up in advance reduces daily negotiation.

Use a consistent signal for when time is up (a timer, a song, or a familiar phrase) instead of stopping the screen suddenly without warning.

Share the screen with them when you can

Sitting with your child while they use an educational app, even for a few minutes, turns it from isolated time into shared time, and gives you a chance to guide what they're learning with simple questions.

Ask your child afterward what they learned or enjoyed; this turns the experience from consumption into learning that sticks.

Choose the content before you choose the time

Favor apps and content designed for your child's age, free of ads or content unrelated to them, rather than letting algorithms auto-suggest what comes next.

A short screen session with purposeful content beats a long one spent browsing aimlessly.
